Life in a Wheelchair: Adjustments

Depending on the extent of the wheelchair disability, driving may no longer be an option. In today’s day and age, there are plenty of options for transportation other than driving yourself. For example, wheelchair accessible vans and taxis are available in many parts of the country. Also, there are businesses dedicated entirely to wheelchair and disability transportation services. Finally, grocery delivery services are also there to minimize the need to drive.

Social Life

Going out to dinner, a family member’s home or any other outing will be more difficult. The main thing to keep in mind is to plan ahead. Call the restaurant to make sure it is wheelchair accessible. Eventually you will figure out the most accessible places to go for food, events and entertainment.

Mental Adjustment

Aside from adjusting to the physical side of being in a wheelchair, the mental adjustment is just as important. Some days you may feel discouraged, but it is important to keep a positive mental attitude in all situations. The more positive you are, the more likely things are to work in your favor. Whenever you face a new challenge, think of it as an opportunity to succeed despite any negative feelings.

It Takes Time

Understand that getting used to life in a wheelchair is going to take some time. There may be some frustrating moments at first, but as you gain experience, it will become easier. Being patient with yourself and people around you is important in staying positive. Life is full of various challenges, but you’ll be an expert soon enough.
